Finance Become and remain AAT licensed
Qualification, professional membership, and practising licence in one structured workspace.
The situation
AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) is not something a company simply gets certified in through a fixed module set and an external audit. It is an individual professional journey with three connected stages: qualification, professional membership, and a practising licence, followed by ongoing licence compliance.
Someone searching for how to become AAT licensed needs to see which route they are on before anything else. Elevale does not award AAT qualifications or licences. It gives you one structured workspace to manage that journey, then stay on top of the requirements needed to maintain your membership and licence.
Two routes to an AAT licence
Route 1: Become an AAT Licensed Bookkeeper
AAT offers bookkeeping qualifications at Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping, Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping, and Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping. After completing the Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping, you can apply for AAT bookkeeping membership and use the designatory letters AATQB. AAT also accepts the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting as a route to AATQB.
An AATQB, MAAT, or FMAAT can then apply for an AAT Licensed Bookkeeper licence. The licence can cover up to five Tier 4 services, subject to demonstrated competence: bookkeeping, accounts preparation for sole traders and partnerships, VAT, computerised accountancy systems, and payroll.
Route 2: Become an AAT Licensed Accountant
The accounting qualification journey runs Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, and Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians. From 1 September 2026, AAT's current Level 4 qualification is the AAT Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians (L4PAT). The previous Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting closed to new registrations on 31 August 2026, although existing students have until 31 July 2028 to finish it.
Completing Level 4 creates a route to AAT full membership (MAAT). Becoming MAAT also involves demonstrating professional competence through work experience, or completing AAT's MAAT CPD pathway where competence requirements cannot initially be demonstrated. An MAAT or FMAAT can then apply for an AAT Licensed Accountant licence, with approval based on demonstrated competence across AAT's four service tiers (currently 18 services).
Why spreadsheets and point tools fall short
Study units, assessment dates, and training provider details sit in one spreadsheet. Work experience and competence evidence sit in another. Licence application tasks such as PII, ICO registration, and AML arrangements sit in email threads. When renewal arrives, CPD records, ethics compliance, and practice assurance actions are scattered again.
Point tools handle one slice well: a CPD log, a document folder, or a task list. None connect qualification progress, membership application steps, licence requirements, and annual maintenance in one maintained record.
How Elevale supports your AAT journey
Elevale gives you one structured workspace to manage the journey towards becoming AAT qualified and licensed, then stay on top of the ongoing requirements needed to maintain your professional membership and licence.
Certification Pathway maps each stage from qualification through licence maintenance, with linked evidence, named owners where relevant, and review dates that stay current. For someone studying, you can track qualification level, units, training provider, assessment dates, revision actions, results, and target completion dates. For someone progressing towards MAAT, you can track work experience, competence requirements, technical and professional skills evidence, and membership application actions. For licence applications, Elevale helps you manage PII, ICO registration, AML arrangements, continuity of practice cover, service competence, and licensing standards tests covering AML, professional ethics, and practice management.
Certification Pathway
Track every stage from study to licence renewal
Certification Pathway structures your AAT journey by stage, not by generic compliance modules. Track units and assessment dates while studying, competence and membership application tasks while progressing to MAAT, licence application requirements when you are ready to practise, and annual maintenance once licensed. Each stage links evidence, tasks, and review dates in one maintained record.
Company Wiki
Controlled policies for AML, ethics, and practice management
Company Wiki stores AML policies, ethics declarations, practice management procedures, and continuity arrangements with version history. Link wiki pages directly to licence application and maintenance stages so policies stay connected to the services you are approved to offer.
Task Management
CPD rhythm built around Plan, Do, Review, Record
AAT describes CPD around four activities: Plan, Do, Review, and Record. Licensed members are expected to record CPD relating to practice management, AML, and their approved services. Task Management connects CPD plans, learning actions, review dates, and recorded outcomes so maintenance does not depend on a standalone spreadsheet.
A practical rhythm from qualification to licence maintenance
- Choose your route. Confirm whether you are pursuing Licensed Bookkeeper or Licensed Accountant status, and open the matching pathway from the certification library.
- Track qualification progress. Record units, training provider, assessment dates, results, and target completion dates while you study. AAT qualifications generally take around 6 to 18 months individually.
- Build membership evidence. Track work experience, competence requirements, and MAAT or AATQB application actions as you progress beyond study.
- Prepare your licence application. Work through PII, ICO registration, AML supervision, continuity cover, service competence, and licensing standards tests in one checklist.
- Maintain year round. Keep licence renewal, CPD (Plan, Do, Review, Record), Practice Assurance Standards, ethics compliance, and practice assurance actions visible so annual renewal does not restart from scratch.
What changes when your AAT journey runs in one system
Individuals working toward AAT qualifications and licences in Elevale spend less time hunting files and more time closing real gaps. Study progress, membership application steps, licence requirements, and maintenance tasks stay connected in one maintained record.
When policies, approved services, or competence evidence change, linked pathway stages update with them. The next membership application, licence renewal, or practice assurance review starts from a complete, current workspace, not a folder rebuilt from email attachments and spreadsheets.

How do I become AAT licensed?
Start by choosing your route. Licensed Bookkeepers usually progress through AAT bookkeeping qualifications to Level 3, apply for AAT bookkeeping membership (AATQB), then apply for an AAT Licensed Bookkeeper licence. Licensed Accountants typically study Level 2 to Level 4 accounting qualifications, apply for full AAT membership (MAAT), then apply for an AAT Licensed Accountant licence. Elevale helps you track whichever stage you are on without losing sight of what comes next.
What are the requirements for AAT?
Requirements depend on your route and stage. Study routes need completed units, assessment results, and progression through the right qualification level. MAAT also involves professional competence through work experience or AAT's MAAT CPD pathway. Licence applications require demonstrated service competence plus arrangements such as Professional Indemnity Insurance, ICO registration, AML supervision, continuity cover where required, and AAT licensing standards tests. Elevale maps each requirement to tasks, evidence, and review dates so nothing sits in a forgotten folder.
How do I renew or maintain my AAT licence?
Licensed members renew annually and must maintain CPD, Practice Assurance Standards, the Code of Professional Ethics, AML compliance, PII, data protection, and continuity cover where applicable. AAT expects CPD to follow Plan, Do, Review, and Record, with licensed members recording practice management, AML, and approved-service CPD. Elevale keeps renewal dates, CPD progress, policy updates, and open practice assurance actions visible year round.
How long does AAT usually take?
AAT says individual accounting qualifications generally take around 6 to 18 months each. Level 4 typically takes around 12 to 18 months. From September 2026, new Level 4 students register on the AAT Level 4 Diploma for Professional Accounting Technicians (L4PAT). The full journey from first qualification to licensed practice takes longer because membership and licence stages sit after study. Elevale helps you sequence units, competence evidence, and application tasks against realistic target dates.
Can Elevale help me manage my AAT journey?
Yes. Elevale does not award AAT qualifications or licences, but it gives you one workspace to manage study progress, MAAT competence evidence, licence application requirements, and ongoing compliance. Certification Pathway connects each stage to linked evidence, tasks, and review dates so qualification, membership, and licence maintenance stay in one maintained record.
